Learners! Driving Test Changes Coming from 6 May 2025
The DVSA is trialling new driving test routes at 20 test centres across the UK to give learners more experience on rural and high-speed roads.
Why the change?
Rural roads are among the most dangerous for new drivers 48% of serious or fatal crashes involving young drivers happen on rural roads, compared to 42% for older drivers. This trial aims to better prepare you for real-world driving beyond the test.
What’s changing in the trial?
• Fewer stops: Now just 3 (instead of 4) giving more time to access high-speed routes
• Emergency stop: Reduced to 1 in every 7 tests (currently 1 in 3)
• Sat nav driving: Could extend from 20 mins to the full duration of your test – giving a stronger focus on independent driving
No changes to what you need to learn, how long the test takes, or how you're assessed.
If your test is booked at one of the trial centres, DVSA will contact you directly to explain.
